Sous-Chef Careers

Are you a highly motivated, organized person? Can you combine a careful attention to detail with a passion for great food?  Do you like to take charge of a situation, and lead a team through difficult times?

A career as a sous-chef (French, meaning under chef) will test your abilities in the fast-paced environment of the restaurant kitchen. Usually appointed in fine-dining establishments, the sous-chef is second in command to the executive chef. While the executive chef is usually focused on broad kitchen decisions such as food ordering and menu development, the sous-chef takes charge of day-to-day tasks. A sous-chef will often perform many roles depending on what’s needed, from expediting orders during lunch service, to jumping on the line during a dinner rush. It’s a demanding career that requires years of experience in the kitchen, but is a necessary step on the way to becoming an executive chef.
