Audio Engineering Degrees

For a student who wishes to break into the recording industry, experience in the field is a huge plus. For this reason, more school or longer programs may not necessarily be better in the long run. Look for programs with an emphasis on hands-on education and instructors who have been successful in the industry.

Audio engineering degrees include:

  • Certification/Diploma: This is by far the most popular degree option for the aspiring audio engineer. Students who complete this level will be educated in basic and some advanced recording techniques, with an emphasis on recording technology and methodology. This is an excellent choice for anyone wishing to enter the music industry in an entry-level position.
  • Associate’s: Also a popular option, the associate’s degree offer a slightly more in-depth study of sound recording due to the length of the program. Generally requiring about two years to complete, this degree will offer advanced training in audio engineering with considerable time in the studio.
  • Bachelor’s: Will combine music principles with recording. The bachelor’s degree in audio engineering will provide a detailed study of the studio and live recording methods, as well as musical training. Music theory, music literature and performance are often coupled with this degree to provide a complete musical education.
  • Master’s: Master’s degrees in audio engineering will generally consist of an interdisciplinary study of advanced audio engineering and either electrical engineering or computer science.
