Systems Engineering Degrees

Are you interested in getting your degree in systems engineering? You’ll want to make sure you research your options to decide on a path that’s right for you. Systems engineering is an exciting career path that offers the opportunity to work on a vast array of projects or just concentrate on individual ones. There are several levels of degrees for systems engineering, and each has its own advantages. Another component is online degrees; most levels of systems engineering degrees can be obtained without leaving your home.

Systems engineering degrees include:

  • Certificate/Diploma – Ideal for those who don’t have time for a full degree and just want to focus on a specific area of engineering, the certificate can often be obtained online. However, the certificate only prepares the student for basic entry-level systems engineering work.
  • Associate’s – The associate’s degree is obtained in two years and allows the student to enter the work force as a network systems engineer. Most programs focus on network design and systems troubleshooting. By the end of the program, a student is ready for certification or to continue onward with his or her education.
  • Bachelor’s – Obtained in four years, the bachelor’s degree puts an emphasis on basic systems engineering in the first two years and a specialized focus of systems engineering in the last two years. While a bachelor’s degree is acquired by just about all system engineers, it usually isn’t the end of a systems engineer’s education.
  • Master’s – Completed two years after obtaining the bachelor’s, the master’s focuses more on hands-on experience, rather than just classroom education. It’s an excellent way for students to get experience prior to entering the work force. Most systems engineers go on to get their master’s degree, as it allows them to pursue the greatest number of careers in systems engineering.
  • Certification – Getting certified in several areas is a great way to demonstrate a level of skill while also setting the certified individual apart from other candidates. Certification isn’t required for systems engineers, but it does help to distinguish them.
