Working in the emergency medical service field is a fast paced, rewarding job that promises not to have two days that are exactly the same. There are several degree paths you can take, but in each case certification is a must.

Some of the options for an emergency medical services degree include:

  • Certificate/Diploma – Typically takes one to two years to complete, the diploma introduces the student to the basics of emergency medical services. A high school diploma or GED is required to enter an EMT program. Those looking for more advanced training in the hopes of being an EMT-intermediate or paramedic will look to an associate degree.
  • Associate’s – The more common degree for emergency medical services, the associate takes about two years to complete and prepares the student for certification as an EMT-intermediate or paramedic. The first year typically revolves around the basic information and terminology while the second year involves the use of machinery and field experiences.
  • Certification/Licensure – Every state require some form of licensure for each level of emergency medical services, but the levels and titles may vary from state to state. Most states require EMTs and paramedics to renew their license every two to three years while also furthering their education to meet continuing-education requirements.
