Interior Design Careers

While the most common profession for someone with an interior design degree is working as an interior designer, there are a variety of career opportunities available for those looking for something else. An interior designer can work as a freelance designer, start an individual design firm, or work for an existing design firm. Some careers for interior designers include landscape, stage, exhibition, kitchen/bath, and event design.

Outside of designing, there are additional diverse career options for interior design graduates to consider, including:

  • Architecture – In charge of creatively planning, designing, and overseeing construction of a variety of structures for diverse clientele and purposes.
  • Space planning and management – Involves drafting floor plans, including arranging furniture and developing cohesive, practical spaces that are functionally and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Construction engineering – Consists of managing and planning construction projects, including designing temporary structures, creating building layouts, and preparing the budget for a build.
  • Environmental planning – Involves planning and designing the construction of structures that encourage sustainability efforts and the future growth of the planet.
  • Styling/Remodeling – In charge of making use of existing spaces and renovating them to be more functional and artful.
  • Sales/Customer service – Major furniture stores employ interior designers to make attractive displays and consult customers on fabric choices, furniture, and artistic elements.
  • CAD/Computer specialist – Using computer-aided design software to create virtual 2-D or 3-D geometric models used for a variety of professionals.
