Criminal Justice Degrees
If you’re considering a degree in criminal justice, you have several options from which to choose. Research the careers that are in line with your interests, and find out which degree would be most helpful in achieving your goal.
It is up to you to decide which degree is going to be the right choice for you. Criminal justice degrees include:
- Associate’s: Generally a two year program, an associate’s degree in criminal justice will provide access to a variety of entry-level positions in corrections, security, law enforcement or the court system. Graduates of this degree also have the option of continuing on to a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
- Bachelor’s: This degree will consist of a more comprehensive study of criminal justice, including criminology, forensics, law enforcement and criminal justice technology. Graduates of this degree program will have the option to enter the workforce as entry- or mid-level employees in a variety of private companies and public agencies.
- Master’s: A master’s degree in criminal justice can speed up your career advancement in lieu of work experience. This program generally follows completion of a bachelor’s in criminal justice, and provides a broad study of criminal justice related subjects, as well as a focus on specific areas of interest. The master’s in criminal justice can also lead to enrollment in a doctoral program.
- Doctoral: A doctorate in criminal justice is generally a concentration within an existing doctoral program; for example, the degree may be a Ph.D in human services or public policy and administration with a focus on criminal justice. These degrees will provide qualification for high-level government positions, as well as teaching positions at a college or university.
